47TH INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF THE INTERNATIONAL COMMISSION ON THE ANTHROPOLOGY OF FOOD AND NUTRITION (ICAF)
7TH INTERNATIONAL MEETING OF THE UNESCO CHAIR ON FOOD, CULTURE AND DEVELOPMENT, UOC
Deadline for submission of proposals 20th July 2024
Food and, in particular, gastronomy, has always had a significant presence in tourism. Food is an important part of culture, and from this perspective, it is also of interest as a tourist resource. However, it is only in the last 30 years that gastronomy has joined the other attractions chosen as worthy of highlighting in institutional tourism promotion. Perhaps for this reason, this association between food/gastronomy and culture/heritage has been an object of academic interest relatively recently. Something as everyday as food culture has only recently "deserved" to be considered an important part of "heritage" and its study.
From this perspective, given the growing importance of the phenomenon, an in-depth understanding of tourism is becoming increasingly necessary, including the need to study its link with food/gastronomy (including wine and beverages) from the point of view of social and cultural disciplines.
This international meeting promoted by the Centro em Rede de Investigação em Antropologia (CRIA), the International Commission on Anthropology of Food and Nutrition (ICAF) and the UOC's Unesco Chair in Food, Culture and Development in the city of Lisbon aims to carry out an interdisciplinary reflection precisely in these terms. On this occasion, we would like to focus on a specific territory: the Iberian Peninsula. In the last half century, the countries that make up the Iberian Peninsula (mainly Portugal and Spain, but also other territories, such as Andorra and Gibraltar) have become international tourist references and, within this framework, have developed clear perspectives related to gastronomic tourism. As a paradigm of the consequences, the Portuguese capital offers us an excellent context for reflection and debate, not only because of its well-known benefits, but also because it is a clear example of what has been argued here.
In this conference, the organising institutions would like to call upon their associates and members, but we would also like to invite international specialists from different human and social sciences (although with an important emphasis on anthropology) to reflect on different aspects related to the role of food and gastronomy in its relationship with tourism in the Iberian Peninsula. Thus, the aim of this meeting is to bring together current perspectives from critical approaches - mainly anthropological but also interdisciplinary - on tourism and gastronomy, strongly linked to local Iberian territories, researching and discussing gastronomy and tourism in the context of the social and cultural and, in doing so, providing some theoretical and practical insights into the future of gastronomy and tourism as a contemporary social reality in relation to these territories.
